Vision Excellence Awards 2020

The year 2020 marks the end of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight – a global initiative launched in 1999. IAPB celebrated individuals whose vision, drive, commitment and quality of work contributed to the successful outcomes and continued learning from the VISION 2020 agenda with Vision Excellence Awards. The Vision Excellence awards recognised their contributions to advocacy, innovation, programme implementation, institution-building and disease control.

The awardees are selected who have contributed towards the launch, implementation and the success of VISION 2020. The VISION 2020: The Right to Sight global initiative sought to promote: “A world in which nobody is needlessly visually impaired, where those with unavoidable vision loss can achieve their full potential.” The Vision Excellence awards will recognise the people who have significantly contributed towards its goals and outcomes.

IAPB celebrated individuals whose vision, drive, commitment and quality of work contributed to successful outcomes and continued learning from the VISION 2020 agenda. The awardee are the individuals whose contributions to advocacy, innovation, programme implementation, institution-building and disease control are at the heart of VISION 2020’s success.

Nepal Blindness survey 1980-81 was one of the milestone in the history of eye care services in the country. Based on the evidences A national master planning in eye care service was initiated in 1981. The plan focused on infrastructure development, human resource development and service delivery. IN 1999 Nepal was one of the first country on SEA region to adopt WHO-IAPB Vision 2020 The Right to Sight global initiative at national level eye care services in the country. Since then, the eye care services in Nepal has set several milestones in eye care services 60% reduction of blindness compare to 1981 Survey, self-reliance on eye health work force (All cadre) production, Elimination of Trachoma as public health problem are the significant ones. All this would have had happened without persistent contribution towards good governance and able leadership in eye health system of Nepal. Dr Ram prasad Pokhrel, Dr Gopal Prasad Pokharel and Dr Sandk Ruit are many of them who are well knowned as the game changer in eye care services of Nepal whose persistent effort, guidance , skill and knowledge, Innovations, advocacy on eye health, resource mobilization, implementation of Vision 2020 goal and strategies and building eye care system has set milestone in eye care services of Nepal.

It was great that recognition of International Alliance for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) awarding “ Vision Excellence Award” to as recognition and the achievements of Vision 2020, The Right to Sight to pioneer Nepalese eye health leaders Dr R.P. Pokhrel, founder of Nepal Eye Hospital, and Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh and Dr GP Pokharel, Chairman of Nepal eye Hospital and Member of Executive Committee of Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh.
